The game was never released in Japan unlike its predecessor ''The Flintstones: The Rescue of Dino & Hoppy''. It was released in August 1993. It is believed to have been released exclusively to Blockbuster Video as a rental title, though despite constantly being cited as such in modern online reviews and websites, no actual evidence of this seems to exist. In this game, the player can switch playable characters between both Fred and Barney, and they both have different attacks and abilities; in the original, the only playable character is Fred. It is one of the rarest games to be released for the console, and is possibly the second rarest commercially released licensed title for the NES (behind ''Stadium Events'').
